1954
Institutional Roots
Takoradi Technical University traces its institutional history to the Government Technical Institute established in April 1954. This earlier technical-education foundation provides the wider setting for the department’s later development.

1993–1994
A Tertiary Pathway
Polytechnic reforms brought Takoradi Polytechnic into Ghana’s tertiary education system and introduced Higher National Diploma study. That academic pathway created the context in which Commercial Arts education developed.

2008
A Dedicated Department
The Department of Graphic Design Technology was carved out of the former Fine Art Department in 2008. It became a dedicated home for graphic design education within the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology.

2016
A Technical University Context
In 2016, Takoradi Polytechnic became Takoradi Technical University. The change reinforced a university environment centred on technical education, research, industry relevance and professional preparation.
